More continuing education opportunities: SCC’s NextGen Initiative

The national SCC offers a resource called the NextGen intiative that seeks to bride the gap between industry newbies and established professionals. Their goal is to offer educational opportunities that may foster a rewarding career in the personal care industry. A few of their upcoming events are noted HERE and also outlined below.

 

UPCOMING INTRODUCTORY COURSES

1) Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry
May 1, 2017 (9:00 am-5:00 pm) at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City
Instructed by Perry Romanowski – Vice President of Brains Publishing
This course is designed specifically with beginning cosmetic chemists in mind, but information presented will also be useful for QA chemists and seasoned veteran scientists who want to learn about other areas of formulations. By attending this course, attendees will receive an introduction to the industry, basic 
physiology of skin and hair, obtain formulation techniques, learn a few tools of the trade and be able to conduct Claims substantiation testing, among many other education tools.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Perry Romanowski is the Vice President of Brains Publishing specializing in the creation of information products including websites, traditional books, eBooks, audio and video focusing on science and its application to the real world.  He has numerous publications to his credit including “Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry”.  He has a Master’s degree in Biochemistry from DePaul University and is an active member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists.

2) Basic Hair Science
May 18, 2017 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm) at the National Office

Instructed by Dr. Roger McMullen – Principal Scientist at Ashland Specialty Ingredients
This course will be beneficial to anyone interested in learning more about hair science and hair care technology and how they relate to problems facing cosmetic scientists. After attending this course, attendees will be able to better understand the fine structure of hair and how it relates to its mechanical and surface properties. In addition, the basics of hair will be explored allowing for attendees to create better formulations.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Dr. McMullen received a B.S. in Chemistry from Saint Vincent College and completed a Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry at Seton Hall University. Roger has over 20 years of experience in the Personal Care industry, having worked in many facets of product development and claims substantiation leading to the commercial launch of new technologies.

3) Cosmetic Chemists Guide to Product Development
September 20, 2017 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm) at the National Office
Instructed by Perry Romanowski – Vice President of Brains Publishing
Covering the the basic process of generating ideas for new cosmetics, developing them into functional products and scaling them up to be sold commercially; this class would be useful for cosmetic formulators, quality control scientists, regulatory scientists, marketing and product development professionals and others who are interested in the process of taking an idea from a brainstorm session to a store shelf. This class will cover Technology Transfer, Market & Consumer Research, learn how to start formulas, create prototypes and understand the process for engineering and scale up, production batching and Regulatory issues.
