The New England Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, is excited to host Giorgio Dell’Acqua at our chapter meeting on Thursday, November 15th.
Giorgio Dell’Acqua, PhD, is a scientist and consultant for the personal care industry. Dr Dell’Acqua graduated from The University of Rome, Italy and worked for 15 years as an investigator in applied medical research in Universities such as Mount Sinai Medical School in New York and Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. He has spent the last 17 years as an executive and cosmetic scientist in the personal care industry. He is specialized in skin and hair care ingredients, finished product development and technical marketing. He has covered multiple roles as a manager and director in different companies specialized in active ingredients and product development. He has helped bring more than 200 successful active ingredients and finished products to market and has authored more than 60 publications in medicine and cosmetic science. In the last 10 years he has been writing and lecturing on natural cosmetic ingredients, sustainable supply chain, and helped sourcing, developing and bringing to market many natural ingredients. He is an award winning speaker on natural ingredients, a regular columnist on sustainable cosmetic science and an adjunct professor in Cosmetic Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is also the chair of the Scientific Affair Committee for the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists and its scientific blogger.
Dr. Dell’Acqua’s presentation, “Sustainable Product Development” will focus on ways to maximize and optimize resources needed to develop a product within the framework of sustainability. Howard recently joined Lincoln Fine Chemical in their newly created Technical Manager position. He has over 12 years of formulation experience in Personal Care R&D. Before joining the Lincoln group, he was a formulator and project leader in global product development for both the Hair and Skin cleansing categories at Unilever HPC. Howard earned his B.S. in Biology from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.

Steve Schnittger is presently the Vice President – Global Microbiology and Fermentation – R&D for the Estee Lauder Companies. He has been with Estee Lauder for over 20 years, all within the Microbiology and Bio-Ferm Lab. His primary responsibilities are in the area of cosmetic preservation and advising the chemists on new formulations. Other responsibilities include: developing new active ingredients through fermentation, advising manufacturing on cleaning and sanitization procedures, and assisting quality assurance and manufacturing when problems arise. Steve works closely with the Safety Group in finding the balance between safety and product preservation.
Before coming to Estee Lauder, Steve worked for Ralston Purina Company and attended school at the
University of Tulsa, majoring in microbiology. He is past chairman of the CTFA Microbiology Committee, an active member of the U.S. TAG / ISO committee for Cosmetic Microbiology, and a member of the American Society of Microbiology, the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and the Institute of Food Technology. Steve holds numerous patents in cosmetic science, fermentation and frequently is asked to give presentations on preservation, risk assessment and fermentation.

Rocco is currently the Chief Scientist for INOLEX where he has served for over thirty-five years. During this period, he has held positions in Analytical Sciences, Process Development (engineering scale-up) and Product Development (synthesis and applications). His career focus has been the research, development and commercialization of new products serving the polyester polyol polymer, urethane polymer, synthetic ester lubricant, and personal care industries. He is the principle or co-author of over thirty patents and applications. Rocco feels that his greatest strength is interacting with customers to understand a need, then marrying that need with an INOLEX solution, a product concept that can be successfully commercialized in a reasonable period of time.
Rocco obtained his degree in Chemistry from Rowan University, and completed post-graduate work in Chemical Engineering at Drexel University. His hobby is music as a drummer with particular interest in 1970’s era progressive rock and jazz fusion.

Patrick Crowley is a Pharmacist by training and has spent his entire career involved in dosage form design, analysis and delivery in the UK and USA. He made significant contributions, as laboratory scientist, team leader and department manager in the development of over twenty novel molecular entities as commercial medicinal products. These included chemical (synthetic) entities, semi synthetics, fermentation products, vaccines and biopharmaceuticals as oral (liquid and solid), parenteral and topical presentations.
Since retiring as a Vice President in Pharmaceutical Development at GlaxoSmithKline Patrick has operated as an independent consultant. He is also a Visiting Professor at The School of Pharmacy, Kings College, London, teaching classes on Biopharmaceuticals, Vaccines and Immunotherapeutic agents. He also teaches modules on Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacture at a Masters Course for Regulatory Affairs Professionals organized by The European Organization for Professional Regulatory Affairs (TOPRA), and has worked with a Team that developed an ONLINE teaching module for Regulatory Affairs professionals in European Union countries (PHAR-IN program), specifically for acquiring an awareness of biopharmaceutical dosage form design manufacture and evaluation.
He does not enjoy running (apart from crossing the finish line) but, nevertheless runs regularly, including annual participation in the Boston Half-Marathon. He looks forward to meeting some (similarly slow) runners at the meeting and possibly a pre- or post-session run.

Tia Alkazaz is currently the Technical Marketing Manager of Active Micro Technologies. Fueled by her interest in cosmetic microbiology, Tia focuses on the study of innovative peptide technology and other alternative antimicrobial materials that are effective, safe, and stable to both chemists and consumers alike. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Mount Union and a Master of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Science with a Concentration in Cosmetic Science from the University of Cincinnati.

The New England Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, in conjunction with local hair care brand, Living Proof, is pleased to host aerosol expert, Jim Hammer, at our chapter meeting on Thursday, September 20th.
Over his 30 year career, Jim has created many new and innovative consumer products, including health and beauty aids, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, dietary and sports supplements, household cleaners and detergents, chemical specialty products, and foods. A member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, Jim is a recognized industry expert, and frequent contributor to magazine, newspaper and website articles, including “Allure”, “Health”, “Cosmopolitan”, “Shop, Etc.”, “The New York Times”, “InStyle” and many others. A quick internet search for “Cosmetic Chemist Jim Hammer” will reveal just a few of his many contributions to the beauty industry.
The event will be held at Living Proof’s Style|lab at their headquarters located at 301 Binney Street in Cambridge, MA. Parking is available in the garage under the building, on the street, or at the One Kendall Square Garage located down the street at 389 Binney Street.
