AbstractHealthy scalp for healthy hairAfter a rapid review of the scalp biology and potential scalp skin conditions, the presentation will address formulation strategies to maintain a healthy scalp. For many people, the scalp is hidden under the hair where no one can see it, and so it does not cause much daily concern. Rarely are consumers complimented for a beautiful scalp. However, attention should be paid to it. The scalp is the soft tissue envelope of the cranium. It is the anatomical area bordered by the face at the front and by the neck at the sides and back. There are five layers to the scalp; the first and outermost one being the skin. This unique part of the body is both an extension of the face and a concentrated area for hair growth. In fact, the proximate structural arrangement of the scalp and hair leads to an interdependent relationship between the two. Thus, maintaining a healthy scalp is important for healthy hair, as well as a healthy hair-free head.

Honey bees and humans have had a relationship for over 10000 years, with organized beekeeping appearing in ancient Egypt and becoming widespread by 1500 BC. Early on, beeswax was used for waterproofing, adhesion, preservation, and in many art forms – including cosmetics. Today beeswax has been replaced in many industrial applications and processes, but its presence in the cosmetic world persists, withstanding the tests of time, market fluctuations, natural tragedies, and controversy.  The Research & Development Manager of Koster Keunen, Belén M. Lemieux, will demonstrate why beeswax is still an indispensable raw material in the cosmetic industry, and what benefits it can offer in different areas of application. Whether your goal is to create a natural cosmetic product, tell a compelling marketing story or discover a unique chemistry, beeswax is worth exploring.

The New England Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists is pleased to host Belén M. Lemieux. Originally from Madrid, Belén earned an M. S. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Salamanca. She began her career in the construction materials industry until discovering a passion for the science of cosmetic formulations and the artistic angle involved. Belén has been an active product developer and researcher for over fourteen years, recently focusing on beeswax and other waxes as cosmetic raw materials. Her most recent paper “Formulating ‘Feel’” was published in Cosmetics & Toiletries magazine, and her formulations have been featured in numerous industry publications and perform as instructive materials for Koster Keunen worldwide.

Color for Cosmetic Science

Color is very subjective. If you show two people the same object, they may describe the color differently, based on their experiences and reference points. And, many conditions affect how a color looks: the light source, size, background, the angle you are viewing it from, even the observers eye can make a difference. In his presentation, Val Cosh, from Konica Minolta, is going to review the essentials of color science and the elements needed to run an effective color process within research and manufacturing environments. Targeted to industry professionals with job functions in controlling the color quality, consistency, and appearance of their products or samples. At the end, you should have a solid understanding of color and the components required for evaluating, communicating, and controlling color internally.

Val Cosh has over 25 years of experience in the world of color measurement — from Service to Product Management and all the way to Sales. Val has the skills that allow to him to best serve customers by finding the exact product solutions needed, to streamline work flows and get the highest return on investments possible. We hope you’ll join us on January 17th at O’Connor’s Restaurant in Worcester for Val’s presentation. You can register online here or on-site.
